THE DOCUMENTED WAIT
The wait has almost doubled.
In February 2025, the International Energy Agency reported the results of a survey of leading industry players.
Buying large power transformers can now take up to four years. That is twice as long as in 2021.
The IEA also reported that power-transformer prices rose around 75% in real terms from 2019 to 2023.
Manufacturers are planning new capacity. The IEA warns those expansions will take time.
THE OTHER CAUSE OF DELAY
The transformer is only one part of the delay.
Permitting remains the biggest cause of transmission-project delays in advanced economies. The IEA says that too.
A transformer cannot rescue a project stalled in permitting. And a permit cannot manufacture a transformer.
